What mountain bike tires are suitable for what terrain?

The advantage of your mountain bike is that you can tackle any terrain on this bike. It is then important to have the right materials on hand. By adjusting your mountain bike tires, you can make even the roughest ride a bit more comfortable. But which mountain bike tires are suitable for which terrain? Here you will find a useful overview and discover why it is so important to match your tires to the terrain.

Why are the right mountain bike tires so important?

There are three factors What to pay attention to during mountain biking: I'm gripping, your speed en rolling resistance. It's primarily the tires that influence these factors. The terrain you cycle on also, in turn, influences how the tires perform. Are you riding on a very smooth surface with tires that have little grip? Then the chance of an accident is high. On a fairly flat surface, it's actually a waste to use tires with a very coarse tread. That causes unnecessary slowing down, preventing you from reaching your top speed.

Therefore, always try to choose mountain bike tires that match your trail. This is especially important when you're always looking for ways to break your personal records. By using the right tires, it's much easier and safer to race through the course at high speed.

Tires for mud

Has it rained heavily and do you expect to ride a muddy route? Then it is important to choose tires with extra good grip. True mud tires have large, widely spaced knobs. This allows the mud to be discharged as well. They are also narrower than average tires. This prevents you from riding on top of the mud; instead, the tire essentially cuts through it. This allows the tire to grip the surface underneath the mud.

The disadvantage of these tires is that they are not suitable for other surfaces. You have significantly less grip on normal forest terrain, and certainly not enough stability when cycling over stones. You also always have to maintain very high tire pressure to be able to ride well through mud.

Tires for dry forest areas

On a dry forest floor, you don't need much grip. Therefore, use tires with few to no knobs. Buy some tires that, on the covered part, have small knobs so you have a bit more grip in a sharp turn. The tread can otherwise be fairly smooth. This ensures limited rolling resistance, allowing you to ride at top speed over dry ground.

Tires for wet forest areas

The forests in the Netherlands are often a bit wet. This certainly applies to areas with little sunlight. The wet ground causes a bit more slipperiness. Therefore, you need tires with coarser knobs for these areas. Make sure the knobs are not only on the side but also on the tread. The knobs can be close together. This results in slightly less rolling resistance than if you were to use tires designed for mud. The small space between the knobs is sufficient to shed extra mud while cycling.

Tires for rocky areas

Perhaps you prefer to trade the forest for rocky terrain. Then you really need special mountain bike tires. These tires are a lot wider than average. This ensures that the tires make more contact with the ground and therefore also have more grip. High knobs are also a requirement for this terrain. These also contribute to your grip on the mountain bike.

In very rough terrain, for example with loose stones or very uneven rocks, it is advisable to opt for reinforced tires. These are reinforced with nylon. This strong material can take a beating and prevents your tire from getting a flat immediately when you ride over a protruding rock.

All-around mountain bike tires

Perhaps you're not keen on changing your tires for every ride. Or maybe you enjoy cycling on varied terrain. In that case, all-round tires are a good choice. They offer a bit of everything. They are lightweight, have low rolling resistance, and offer average grip. For example, the tires are equipped with knobs of varying heights. This ensures that the tires have reasonably good grip on almost all types of terrain.

These tires are primarily a good choice when you don't always need to cycle at top speed. Your goal may not be to break records, but rather to enjoy fun mountain bike trails at your own pace. All-round tires will support you well then. They are not perfectly suited for every terrain, but they do offer sufficient grip and safety everywhere.

Play with different front and rear tires

You now know which mountain bike tires are suitable for certain terrains. Now it's time to fully personalize your mountain bike. You do this by also considering the collaboration between the front and rear wheels. Both have a slightly different function. Your front wheel primarily ensures you have grip and must be easy to steer. Your rear wheel carries most of the weight and therefore needs to be fairly light and roll easily.

This is why it is sometimes better to choose two different types of tires. For the front tire, focus mainly on a coarser tread or opt for a model with firm knobs. The rear tire can have a slightly less coarse tread, but it must roll well. Avoid making the difference between the tires too great. On wet, soft surfaces, you definitely want good grip. Therefore, the rear tire must also be suitable for this terrain. The last thing you want is to slide out when you brake hard.
